Bladder strengthening (Kegel exercises), Fluid Restriction, Behavioral Therapy, and Viveve Treatment are a couple of non-surgical treatment options for Stress Urinary Incontinence. The most common is the Kegel exercise, which strengthens the muscles of the vagina. In this video, we discuss a couple of the devices that assist with Kegel exercises and provide better results. The most effective of the non-surgical treatment options is the Viveve Procedure, which is non-surgical and pain-free.
Quick flicks are a way to practice using the fast twitch fibers of the pelvic floor muscles, which help to control sudden changes in intra-abdominal pressure and maintain continence. This is especially important to avoid stress incontinence if urine leaks with coughing, sneezing, jumping, squatting. Quick flicks can also be used to supress strong urinary urge sensations if you are having difficulty making it to the bathroom on time.
Frances Stewart, RN, advanced practice nurse and nurse continence advisor at Womenβs College Hospital, explains how to do Kegel exercises correctly to strengthen the pelvic floor.
In this weeks Functional Kegels video, we will explore pelvic floor exercises on the ball. This exercise ball workout is much more challenging than it looks (which you can tell by my shortness of breath!!)
Make sure to try the Basic Kegels before moving to the Functional Kegel series. Enhancing the connection between your brain and pelvic floor is a first step. Getting your pelvic floor muscles activating properly while building strength, endurance and the ability to do fast contractions is the second step. These functional kegels should only be tried when you have achieved success in the first two steps.
These exercises can help to improve symtpoms of urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and other pelvic floor dysfunctions.
